At the start of the recession Emma and her business partner Andrew decided to launch their company Pyramid8, in a highly competitive industry – recruitment – without any previous experience. Fast forward 10 years and the fact the company is thriving is testament to Emma and Andrew’s drive and determination.
“We knew we wanted to be a £1m business from the beginning and our motto is, ‘It’s all about the people’, which is genuinely at the heart of everything we do.
I joined Richard White’s Leeds, Halifax and Bradford Academy Group last spring. As soon as I heard Academy members saying quite openly where they wanted their businesses to be by 2020, I thought, ‘I need to be part of this, I need to be around people who think like this’.
I describe the Academy as being like a family. Richard is just so supportive and nurturing, I come away from the monthly events totally drained but enthused about changes I can make to our business. The quality of the leadership development is outstanding, compared to anything else I’ve seen on the market, so professional and dynamic. We even meet up for a monthly ‘Mastermind’ meeting outside the ACE events.
That’s what I love most about the Academy, I’m inspired by the other members, Richard and the great speakers. One light bulb moment was listening to Cesar Gamio. He’s had such a massive impact on my life and the way I support my staff in the business. I’m currently learning how to achieve complete well-being and find peace, by understanding how stress and work can impact on my body and mind.
Before I joined the Academy, I didn’t know what I was missing out on. Now I focus on looking after my team and implementing new ways of leading and caring for them. This increases their engagement and enables the business to succeed and grow. Another key takeaway I’ve also embraced is ‘An employee joins a business but leaves a boss,’ I genuinely want all my staff to stay with us and so I focus on their well-being too.
Looking ahead, I want to continue to grow the business and triple its size within the next five years. I’m also hoping to master the art of well-being, while mastering how effective I am, every minute I’m working in the business. I also plan to continue being disruptive in the industry and in the business. For me, an idle mind is definitely not good!”
