Major showcase in high-profile Times CEO supplement secured by the Academy for Chief Executives

Academy for Chief Executives Press Release 1 December 2016 Times Banner The Academy for Chief Executives has taken a significant step to raise its profile by supporting a major national newspaper supplement about ‘The Future CEO’. The 16-page Raconteur produced supplement, run in The Times newspaper on 1 December, features the Academy in a prominent position on page two with a special membership offer for readers. In a time of dynamic change and uncertainty, the supplement focuses on how the role of the chief executive is changing, and examine some of the challenges that lie ahead. Academy CEO, Ian Price, said: “As an organisation devoted to unlocking the potential of every business leader, the Academy is already helping CEOs adapt for the future. “This prominent national supplement is a welcome opportunity to showcase the invaluable work of CEOs across the country and the challenges they face. We’re proud to play our part.” The supplement covers topics such as culture, leadership and the routes to becoming a CEO. It also examines some of the new thinking in boardrooms including how large, well-established corporations can work in collaboration with start-ups. The publication also delivers some valuable insights into newer concepts such as design thinking. Executive education is covered in the report, which asks whether enough has been done to exploit new learning channels to help executives make the most of their limited time. The Academy model – world class speakers, peer to peer learning with other successful business leaders combined with one to one coaching, mentoring and guidance – has helped hundreds of CEOs guide their organisations through times of change. But the Academy too is looking at new ways to support CEOs with some new digital developments planned for next year. Budget Wish-List

Philip Hammond has some difficult choices to make in Wednesday’s Autumn Statement, his first budget speech as Chancellor. So amid a background of ominous economic forecasts and continuing post-Brexit uncertainty, we asked our Academy Chairs what they would like to see him do.  Here’s what they had to say.


Justin Grace is the Academy for Chief Executives Chair for Scotland

“I would like to see more infrastructure spend to promote growth to offset any risk uncertainty. And it’s time to stop hammering landlords. Also, for the government to reinstate government support agencies for SMEs. They are the future of growth. Last but not least they should stop tinkering with pensions. Pensions require a long term view and constant change creates confusion and uncertainty and risks less saving.”


Hilary Rowland is a London Group Chair for The Academy for Chief Executives

“The general tenor of what has been coming out from the government over the last couple of months has not been encouraging towards business. This is dangerous because the economy is very dependent on business, especially with the uncertainty over Brexit.

“In particular, SMEs need to be encouraged as they are an important contributor to the economy both in terms of employment, but also in the extent of business confidence. They are much more able to flex and stretch with tensions in the economy in a way that corporates can’t.

“We need investment in infrastructure, particularly projects that are ‘spade ready’.”


Stephen Salt is the Home Counties Chair for The Academy for Chief Executives

“A pledge to introduce no new input taxes or other significant costs on businesses for the remainder of this Parliament, a temporary widening of the Annual Investment Allowance – to include business premises improvements for a period of five years, alongside investments in plant and machinery and improving the implementation of the Apprenticeship Levy for SMEs – ie., levy-paying businesses should be able to support high-quality workplace and vocational training, in addition to apprenticeships.”


David Brient is the East Anglia Chair for the Academy for Chief Executives

“In East Anglia our members are especially concerned with the lack of quality skilled employees, particularly in the engineering sector. A shift in government funding support to put more money back in to further education rather than the gradual process of reduction seen in last few years would be hugely welcome. So too would help to promote apprenticeships, especially for young engineers.”


Harry Wyndham is the South-East London Chair for the Academy for Chief Executives

“Hammond has said he is not going to be constrained by Osbourne 2020 targets, so I expect that there will be increased spending on classic utility and infrastructure projects - road, rail, utilities - but it won’t be a bonanza. It would be nice to see something to help businesses adversely affected by exchange rates since Brexit vote as well as lower taxes in some areas. However I also expect to see an increase in inflation estimates.”


Ian Price is the South Downs & Solent Chair for the Academy for Chief Executives

“I’d like to see corporation tax reduced in line with expectations coupled with steps to encourage continued growth in employment. Southampton is gateway for world trade, so we also need increased infrastructure investment especially road, rail and seaport access. I’d also like to see incentives for house-building to meet demand for housing in the South of England and create employment opportunities. Finally, there needs to be some form of UK regional aid put in place to replace European regional funding.”


Karen Gray is the North East Chair for the Academy for Chief Executives

“It needs to be recognised that the North East is a key part of the Northern Powerhouse – it’s not all about the North West. We need successor funding to current EU regeneration funding and trade support to enable current regional net exporting position to be further enhanced as well as greater spending on infrastructure – road improvements, high speed rail expansion on the East Coast mainline and regional investment in metro/underground transport in urban areas. We also need to think about the future of our workforce and consider more carefully the potential implications and impact of the Apprenticeship Levy.”

Most corporate websites score hits, but no real connection to customers or potential purchasers. In this talk, Graham explains why that happens and how you can convert your company’s web presence into something that will truly connect with Internet users. You will leave with some insight and ideas that you can apply immediately upon your return to your organisation.

Meet our South Herts & Essex group at Hertfordshire Business Expo (6 February 2017)

For the first time, the Academy are exhibiting at the biggest business event in Hertfordshire. The Hertfordshire Business Expo will see the launch of Academy Group 55 covering the South Herts and Essex areas- where group Chair Chris Dinwoodie will be meeting with attendees, exhibitors, speakers and local business associations.
